With its sleek design and futuristic cockpit, it’s evident why the Kia Sportage made an illustrious entry into the market. It ranks among the top 5 SUVs available, but does it truly deserve that recognition?
Given the abundance of SUV choices, it’s challenging to feel assured that the money you’re investing is justified for this vehicle.
Exterior:
The Sportage starts at R567,995 ($30,122) for the base LX model, while the GT-Line comes at a slightly higher price of R762,995 ($40,464). At first glance, the difference may not seem significant. However, upon closer inspection, you can discern the variations.

These differences include a sunroof, a front splitter and rear diffuser, a distinctive geometric bumper in conjunction with the grille, and several other subtle details. Nevertheless, it is when you step inside that the price tag begins to make sense.

Interior:
The base LX model only offers standard cruise control and rear Parking Distance Sensors (PDCs).
On the other hand, the range-topping GT-Line greets you with a profusion of leather and opulence. It features heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and various other amenities, solidifying its reputation as one of the best SUVs available.
Here’s a list of what the GT-Line has to offer:
- Heated and ventilated seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Front PDCs
- 18″ Rims
- Electric boot
- Lane-keep assist
- Cruise Control
- Laser-guided Cruise Control
- Electric seat controls
- Rear passenger seat controls
- Rear ventilated seats
- Rear seat fold-down levers in the boot
- And many more.
While some might argue that the price difference of approximately 200K isn’t substantial or that the Sportage may not be worth it, considering the additional features listed above, you actually receive greater value for your money than anticipated.

With a larger-than-life boot capacity of 591L, there is more than enough space to stow almost anything. Perhaps even a horse.
Oily Bits:
The Sportage range is equipped with 1.6-litre engines and 7-speed Dual Clutch transmission, available in either Petrol or Diesel options.
The entry-level LX model boasts a modest 100kW (134hp) and offers more torque than the GT-Line, with 320Nm (236ft-lb), thanks to its Diesel engine. On the other hand, the GT-Line delivers 132kW (177hp) and 265Nm (194ft-lb).
The vehicle performs adequately and has no trouble with overtaking. However, given its substantial size and weight, it could benefit from a bit more power to match industry standards in terms of performance.
Both the LX and GT-Line models feature a sport driving mode, which essentially functions similarly across the board.

Final thoughts:
The Kia Sportage is an excellent SUV with a multitude of features across its various models. The GT-Line, in particular, stands out for its combination of practicality and luxury. If you have around R800k to spend on a luxury car and are in search of a truly remarkable SUV, the Sportage is a compelling option.
Is it the best SUV out there? Well, it definitely ranks among the top 5. Like most vehicles, there are a few minor drawbacks that may become noticeable in day-to-day usage. However, such aspects can be found in almost all cars to some extent.
Things I like:
- The interior is comfortable and provides a pleasant environment.
- The fuel consumption is good if you drive conservatively, although it can increase significantly when you accelerate aggressively. But this is a common trait among all cars. But I do feel this is more prominent with the Sportage.
- The Sportage offers quick acceleration and provides comfort and features that cater to every aspect of your curiosity. I appreciate the presence of a three-point safety belt in the rear, which ensures safety in case of an accident.
- While I find the overall design appealing, I particularly think the rear end of the Sportage looks better. It may not be the absolute best-looking SUV, but it won’t make you want to rip out your eyes either.
- The panoramic sunroof in the GT-Line is a great feature. It creates a sense of spaciousness and openness within the cabin, making it a pleasant place to be.
Things I don’t like:
- The multifunction display controlling the air conditioning and radio is too tiny, frustrating for people with larger hands. It’s easy to press the wrong function and cause annoyance. I’d suggest leaving it on air conditioning and controlling the radion via the steering wheel.
- The ride is quite firm, and when driving over bumps, it feels like your spine is connected to the car. However, switching to sport mode improves the ride quality significantly.
- The ventilated seats don’t provide a noticeable effect. I couldn’t feel much of anything when using them, which was disappointing.
- Even the class-topping GT-Line has a manual hood holder. For a car that’s more than three-quarters of a Million Rand. I’d expect something electronic.
Which model do I prefer and suggest someone buy?
Personally, I would be content with the LX model as a daily driver.
Is the GT-Line worth the additional cost of around 200k? It depends on your preferences and demographic. Considering the extra features and equipment you receive, I would say yes, it is worth it considering the kit you get.
Choosing between the LX model and the GT-Line is a no-brainer. If you’re seeking more features and value from the Sportage, the GT-Line is the way to go. However, the base LX model is perfectly suitable for daily use as it offers a whole array of standard features.
